Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) is precisely acclaimed for the portrayal of New England Puritans in his fiction. The ultimate goal of Hawthorne, according to Madsen, is to excuse the sins of his fathers by showing that they were incapable of acting oppositewise (Madsen, 1999, p. 510). What Madsen means by a monolithic Puritanism is i that here allows only one interpretation of itself and its significance (Madsen, 1999, p.516). In other words, it is an essentialist and stereotypical representation that does not take into account the complexities and the changeability of puritan behavior in an attempt to portray its underlying and unchanging essence.
